We have asked our authorities to be on standby and directed the MEA to remain in touch with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” PM Modi posted on X.
The 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 11:50 am (local time) on Friday, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were also felt in Thailand, causing disruptions.
As per Reuters, Thailand’s stock exchange suspended trading after the quake. Additionally, in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, a building under construction collapsed, trapping 43 workers inside. Seven individuals managed to escape, while rescue teams were deployed for immediate assistance, reported Nation Thailand.
In response to the disaster, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra issued an urgent nationwide alert, warning citizens of potential aftershocks. He directed government ministries to coordinate relief and rescue efforts.
Despite the powerful tremors, no immediate casualties or significant damages have been reported. Authorities continue to assess the situation as rescue operations remain ongoing.
